Seminole Heights An Intimate Look at the Early Years ~ Thursday, April 17th 7:30pm Tampa Theatre. In case you've been in a coma or abducted by aliens for the last couple days and didn't hear, the movie premier was a sell out! Congratulations to Suzanne Prieur for having the vision, the Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Association's Preservation Committee for providing the muscle, and mostly to Gene and Krissy Howes of Cigar City Pictures for having the creativity and expertise to create this awesome production. The film was informative, entertaining, and inspirational. It highlights just how fortunate we are to have this neighborhood so rich with natural beauty and character to call home. What a tremendous foundation we have to build upon and what a marvelous thing it is that we have it chronicled and captured on film to be shared with future generations. Unfortunately, you won't be able to recapture the off screen excitement as old time friends and neighbors reunited before the film, but you can pick up your own copy of this great DVD, on sale now, at Sherry's Yesterdaze (5207 N. Florida Ave.) and Tampa Antiquarian Books (6116 N. Central Ave.).

Seminole Heights Local Businesses

As much as 80% of the money spent in a national chain leaves town in the overnight deposit! A pretty surprising statistic, isn't it? I'll be writing more about the virtues and benefits of shopping locally soon, but for now just consider this. Studies show that a dollar spent in a locally owned, independent business circulates in the community an average of three times more than a dollar spent in a chain. When you add in the resulting transactions and collection of sales tax in our state, it's up to five times as much revenue for public projects, for emergency services, for schools, for libraries, and for our roads. Little choices add up to big dollars and has a direct impact to our communities and our quality of life. Make the choice to shop local!

Couture Decor of Seminole Heights

(5310 N. Central Ave., Suite D 813-310-7606) Seminole Heights resident and fourth generation Tampa native, Nikki Couture has been decorating and renovating historic homes in the bay area since 1999. Affirming Nikki’s sense of style and knowledge of historic homes, the Couture’s homes have been featured on three Seminole Heights annual home tours. Due to numerous requests for assistance with their own historic properties, she began offering her expertise to clients in home, commercial, and retail settings. Her services include renovation and remodeling ideas, furniture and textile selection, color consulting, as well as landscape and hardscape design. With an eye for texture and character, she likes to combine items from salvage yards and antique shops to create her own unique touch. Although her expertise is not limited to historic structures, Nikki excels in crafting an urban sense of style and character into early 1900’s buildings while respecting their historical nature through the use of period appropriate colors, furniture, lighting, and hardware. Whether you just need help in choosing that perfect color to a complete renovation, getting the help of a skilled professional can help you stay on budget while realizing dramatic results.

Engelberger's Nursery (6803 N. 15th Street 813-239-9283)

Helping to Beautify Yards Since 1947. As you may have guessed, I'm an advocate of locally owned, independent businesses and thorough enjoy gardening so what a great tip this was. Don Engelberger is a third generation nurseryman, born and raised right here in Seminole Heights. You could easily pass his place by, thinking it was just someone's lush back yard (which it is) but it's well worth the time to slow down a bit and find him on the east side of 15th Street just a bit south of Sligh.  He carries a great variety (so much more than displayed here) of plants and is more than happy to help you locate whatever it is you're looking for. I had an awesome time touring the grounds and talking about plants and the Seminole Heights of days gone by with Don. It was quickly apparent that here was a man that loved his work and his knowledge came from years of hands on experience. I was equally pleased to learn that he uses very few chemicals in the growing of his plants - just try talking about the virtues of manure and making your own compost at your nearest chain store.

As an added treat to the antique lovers, Don has created his own little village and it's loaded with an amazing variety of antiques. In addition to the images displayed here, he also has a barber shop and a blacksmith. The best part is each store is equipped with their accompanying antiques. Yep, cash registers, scales, seed spreaders, school desks, maps, photos, barber's chair, tools....on and on.

Cappy’s (4910 N. Florida Ave. 813-238-1516) In case you missed it, the jam packed city council meeting for variances to keep Cappy’s open was a testament to what a

good pizza recipe and community support can accomplish. The neighborhood came out in large numbers to support the unique, home-grown establishment for very good reason. The building and décor are just as special as the food. Enjoy your meal sipping your favorite beer in the relaxing courtyard or dine indoors and take in all the interesting memorabilia. Either way, you’re in for a good time. Me, I just love watching the elevated toy train make its way around the room – life’s simple pleasures!
